Adult Development
is one of the programs offered at our Employment
Training Center, located at 204 S. Cherry St. in
Harrison, Arkansas. Hours of operation are Monday
through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
The
AD program is like an extension of Special Education
services for adults, with various topics being taught
and discussed in a classroom setting. The aim of
|
the AD program is to provide
learning opportunities that assist participants with acquiring,
retaining, or improving the skills that directly affect their
ability to reside successfully within the community and avoid
institutionalization. Each participant receives assistance
through an Individual Program Plan, which assesses strengths
and weaknesses in the general areas of Self-Help, Socialization,
and Communication. Learning objectives are developed from
the assessment results, which guide the instructors in creating
daily lesson plans for participants.

A sample of the topics that
may be covered in the Adult Development program include: language
development, reading, budgeting, computer literacy, emergency
response procedures, first aid, community awareness, establishing
and maintaining relationships with peers, nutrition, fitness
and personal hygiene. Additionally, pre-vocational instruction
is available that prepares interested participants for employment.
Pre-vocational instruction promotes learning in such areas
as compliance, attending, task completion, problem solving,
and safety.
Through its Adult Development
Program, Independent Living, Inc. helps individuals with disabilities
find meaningful ways to spend their time and enjoy their lives
to the fullest extent.
